my feelings about Mangino after the game on Saturday..

...are best captured by this youtube user:

the decision to combine a song from a Disney musical with footage from a movie of dubious quality was an inspired decision. the decision to drop your offensive line into your own endzone on 3rd & 10 and then run the ball was a much less inspired one.

An American Tale

Something about this story makes me very happy.

A couple of aspiring reality-TV stars from Northern Virginia appear to have crashed the White House's state dinner Tuesday night, penetrating layers of security with no invitation to mingle with the likes of Vice President Biden and White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

Tareq and Michaele Salahi -- polo-playing socialites known for a bitter family feud over a Fauquier County winery and their possible roles in the forthcoming "The Real Housewives of Washington" -- were seen arriving at the White House and later posted on Facebook photos of themselves with VIPs at the elite gathering.

"Honored to be at the White House for the state dinner in honor of India with President Obama and our First Lady!" one of them wrote on their joint Facebook page at 9:08 p.m.

I like to think of it as an example of the Founding Fathers' desire for a government accessible to the people. Plus I love how they don't know how to spell Rahm Emanuel's first name.

We discussed this over drinks last night and concluded it's not a big deal because the closest they apparently got to a VIP was Joe Biden.

Disappointed that Obama hasn't solved all the world's problems yet?

Thanksgiving in Hong Kong

It's a working day here, so we celebrated early last night at a friend's place. It was very traditional. There was tandoori turkey. There was a drunk Chinese guy who wanted to argue about Oregon football and said fuck the homies on 107th Street who called him "chino" and were all up in his shit, yo. (No, it didn't make a whole lot of sense at the time either.) There was the cock fighting belt buckle.

I went to look up a tandoori turkey recipe and came across this endlessly fascinating video.

"can't has no place in ladies lacrosse, gentlemen."

the five game losing streak (where KU sucked on defense, offense, and special teams) pretty much sapped my desire to think about KU football, but now i'm officially excited about KU football again!

i propose going back to the oklahoma well for our new coach...

Takin' it to the river...coffee house style

My friend James was kind enough to post a couple tunes here and here. Thought the Norlosers might enjoy.

We're getting ready for a little Soul comin' our way in February...been a busy time. But just got back from vacation. We snorkeled in the Octupus's garden. We also saw a couple of sea turtles, which are considered very good luck, but Mrs. Soul vetoed naming a baby "Honu". Also nix on "Mini-Mark", for the record.

RIP, KU football...

Where ya been, Guapo?

Hey baby.

Ignoring you? No baby. Not you. Not ever you. Can I ignore oxygen? Food? Xavier Henry? No, baby, I can't ignore those things, just like I can't ignore you.

But see, it's like this, baby. I got a job. It's a nice job. They pay me to do sweet things to newspaper stories. Sweet, soft, moist things. Oh yeah. It's good, and I like it. And don't we all like it?

But see, that's a general job, baby. It's all Asia. China, Japan, Mongolia, Singapore, North Korea, India, I loved em all. Ok, maybe not North Korea. But I couldn't commit, doll. You feel my stroke?

Then they asked me to commit. To Japan. They got a fella there named Hatoyama. And his space-alien wife. And Kamei. Oh yeah, we love Kamei. Indeed. And sorry, sorry airlines. (Full disclosure: I don't love that one so much.)

So, Japan we can commit to. It has octopus balls. And tentacle porn. And no, octopus balls and tentacle porn aren't the same thing. But I can commit.

Oh wait, but the Guapo's gonna be general, too. Japan deserves a lot of tender lovin' care, she does. But the rest of Asia gets jealous too. Can't I spend a little time? So spread me thin, baby, cuz the Guapo's got a lot of love for a lot of places.

Oh wait. The harshest mistress of all needs me now. The night desk! Where the magic happens: words, photos and headlines coming together in an erotic dead-tree tango. It seems vacations, illnesses and software updates have combined to weed out those among the Guapo whose love can't take them beyond. Some people just can't love. But not Guapo. He loves too much!

So Guapo gets up in the morning. He does is Japan love and his Asia love in the morning for the early U.S. edition. Then he spends his day with the Asia love. His evening lovin' Japan. And his nights and early mornings in the dead-tree tango. Then up again four to five hours later for more love frenzy.

Yes.

The Guapo's been doing this for nine of the past 10 days, baby. And he's tired. He loves to love. But even for Guapo, love's exhausting.

Tricks, Treats and Fireworks

The first October we lived here, slug was amused by the "Trick or Treat set for Oct. 31" headline. As it turns out, Halloween that Tuesday night was the only time in four years trick or treating has taken place on Halloween. H Tues, T or T Tues; H Wed, T or T Tues; H Fri, T or T Thurs; H Sat, T or T Fri. Having grown up where trick or treating happened on Halloween (and after dark, but at no set time), this just feels wrong to me. I'm also old fashioned enough to think that everyone trick or treating should be 1) in a costume and 2) say "trick or treat" and "thank you". Strangely, lack of "trick or treat" annoys me far more than a lack of thanks.
Locally, Independence Day celebrations are rarely actually on the 4th, even when the 4th falls on the weekend. This, too, is contrary to my upbringing and what I think it right.
So, I'm curious, in the places you've lived where Halloween and Fourth of July have been celebrated, in how many have the primary festivities taken place on the 31st and 4th?

The first year or so, I felt horribly read so I started reading more of the sort of books that might make it into the ToB. Even so, I still have never read more than four books at the start of a tournament. The best part is, even though I've read a lot of good books over the course of the year, th

As usual, I haven't read any of them. I feel illiterate. Jebus, is that what it feels like to be you? But I've rediscovered reading. Dr. No bought me the final book in James Ellroy's Underworld USA trilogy, "Blood's a Rover," which kicks all kinds of ass. Then two Paul Theroux books, the Dexter Fil
