Help Me Kick Ass in Library School

Now’s your chance, all you movie and music lovers. I need to find some resources for two assignments in library school. And I want them to kick ass! I need fabulous suggestions for online music websites that have any or all of the following: news, reviews, criticism, record label sites, or discussion forums…but they must be appropriate for teens. I am also putting together a “Top Ten Collections” for film databases, such as IMDb, that independent video store employees or customers would find helpful to use. Any good ideas?

rottentomatoes.com is a good movie site that gives the user insight into what critics think about a movie.

Define "appropriate for teens." Village Voice has a great site for music, but cusswords and classified ads for shemales may also be in the mix.

I'm not sure if this is what you had in mind, but one of my movie bookmarks is badmovies.org. It's pretty well sanitized, considering how many gory Grade B horror flicks make it in, but there is the occasional "RANDOM GRATUITOUS BREAST SHOT" listed in the timer section. (visit and you'll see the part I'm talking about). In fact, I recommend visiting soon because the two latest reviews featured on the front page make a pretty good read, and are good examples of the kind of material you find throughout.

My music bookmarks are busted at the moment. Dunno what's up with that.

Here's a fun music link: Podbop.org.

College Music Journal web site.

Pitchfork of course.

Aforementioned Village Voice, but watch for dirty words.

All Music Guide a not-bad source for music business stuff.

A pretty decent hiphop blog is hiphopmusic.com. Hard to find good hiphop sources online.

Good MP3 blog here.

Thanks, these are really good. What's appropriate for teens? It probably depends on the teen/parent, but anything that your 12+ yr old can view- easy on the cussing, sex, violence, etc. I might have a more specific definition of this once I have a few years of library science under my nerdy belt.

When I mentioned to a co-worker the lack of good hiphop web sites, he recommended The Wire at SOHH. I think it stands for "Support On-Line Hiphop."

Another business/industry site: Future of Music Coalition.

I ended up using Podbop, Music Hawk, and Gnoosic for my hypothetical teen website recommendations. They had to be new resources not listed on IPL (internet public library). The primary elements I considered was whether something was informative and entertaining, and of course appropriate for people 12-17 yrs old. I found some cool punk rock websites for girls, but they were either already listed on the IPL or had some questionable content (like linking to porn). I'm still taking suggestions for film websites/print resources as that assignment isn't due yet.

Here's one I forgot to include before: Insultingly Stupid Movie Physics.

This is a site which reviews movies according to its representation of the laws of physics. For example, a movie gets downgraded if an actor is shot with a tiny gun and is consequently blown backwards 20 feet, catches fire, and explodes. That's an exaggeration, but you get the idea.
